Join Roger Noel on a fascinating exploration of one of Jersey’s most picturesque Bays, the Bay of St Brelade.
This circular walk begins when you meet your guide at the Bus Stop on the top of the Oyster Box Restaurant, in St Brelade’s Bay .
Learn about the people who have made it their home from the Neanderthal Mammoth hunters of the last ice age through to the 1940-45 occupation, and modern day inhabitants.
From the fountain in the enchanting Esplanade Gardens, we take a gentle stroll along the promenade to Le Grouin Point to reveal outstanding views, and uncover the cleverly concealed remains of a 76 year old German fortification.
Dependent upon the tides, you may have the opportunity to explore the intertidal zone near Ouaisne and look up to the world famous archaeological site of Cotte de St Brelade.
Heading back along the beach, we wander up the ancient Perquage path, and into the cemetery of our wonderful 10th Century Church dedicated to St Brelade, also known as St Branwalade.
Here we will linger to admire this fascinating church, and learn of the story behind its construction on this site. There will also be time to visit the wonderful Medieval Fisherman’s Chapel, decorated still with beautiful frescoes, a reminder of a bygone era.
Strolling through the churchyard, we will pause awhile to gaze over the Bay, recently voted as one of Britain’s top 10 beaches on TripAdvisor. Take a moment to admire from afar the striking headland, home to La Cotte de St Brelade, a true ice age marvel.
From here we can also see the former home of two famous Frenchwomen, Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore (Lucy Schwob and Suzanne Malherbe). Hear of how this brave and eccentric pair, known as “the Surrealist Sisters” led the Commanders of the Occupying Forces on a merry dance during the WW2 occupation of the Island, with their cleverly planned and executed Resistance activities.
This gentle stroll, which encounters no hills and just a few steps, will take approximately two hours, with a chance of a well earned refreshment at the end.
