Bergerac Tour: Solve the mystery of the missing chalice
Solve the mystery of the missing chalice
The chalice
The beautifully-crafted 18th century loving cup by Huguenot silversmith Pierre Amiraux was created in Jersey around 1750 - 1760.
This charming chalice has flared lip and scroll handles and body with raised girdle. The coat of arms for the Labey family of Jersey is set on a circular stepped foot, the base with makers mark struck once and the initials TLB, weight 7.5oz 5.5in (14cm) high.
The Mystery
For the past 260 years this beautiful chalice has been on display in the silverware of St Helier Town Church, a gift from our Wartime Rector. However the church cleaners, arriving on Saturday last, armed with silver polish and cloths, discovered that this precious chalice has mysteriously disappeared. There are no signs of forced entry and the cupboard was securely locked, with a key held only by the Dean of Jersey and the Church Warden.
